Here’s the background behind our platoon mantra of “Bring the Sawdust”. During the Revolutionary War era, Marines employed various tactics and preparations for maritime raiding and naval combat. Marines during that time were typically responsible for providing security on board ships, engaging in boarding actions, and supporting naval operations. They were skilled in close-quarters combat and played a vital role in defending ships, conducting boarding parties, and repelling enemy attacks. Sawdust was spread to absorb moisture and prevent slipping on wet surfaces. While boarding ships in naval combat, Marines would throw sawdust down on the decks so that their feet could grip and they could continue to fight despite the decks becoming slick with blood. Marines would use knives, pistols, three sided bayonets and boarding axes to engage in close combat with the enemy.
